Welcome to the Lasham Classical Music Festival 2019. This unique Festival brings together talented Classical Artists who will perform a programme of Classical works to enjoy and inspire. Alongside providing breath-taking performances, our aim is to provide support and funding to help develop local young musicians in partnership with The Esseham Music Charity and we take great pride in asking some of the students to perform at our events.
Lasham Classical Music Festival’s fourth annual festival begins on Wednesday 5thJune 2019 and concludes on Sunday 9thJune 2019 with St Mary’s Church Lasham the venue for all concerts. This year’s programme explores a great wealth of 20th century composers influenced by the conflicts that they lived through and witnessed first hand.
Wednesday 5thJune - 7.30pm The opening concert at St. Mary’s Church Lasham opens the festival with Britten’s Temporal Variations and Edward Elgar’s Piano Quintet.
Friday 7thJune we have introduced a mid-day concert featuring Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) for violin, clarinet & piano.
On Saturday our supper concert explores the theme of conflict with John Williams’s “Theme from Schindler’s List” from the 1994 Best Picture, two movements of Copland’s ballet ‘Billy the Kid’ and Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes. A supper interval of 80 minutes lets you dine either at The Royal Oak or yin the marquees with a picnic hamper for the marquee from Grassi and Jones, making this a wonderful social occasion as well as a musical outing.
The festival concludes with two works directly influenced by the Second World War, Ernest Moeran’s Fantasy Quartet and our final work is Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time which was written whilst he was a prisoner of war in a German camp. As it has come to be recognised as one of his most important works and we can’t think of a better way to bring this year’s festival to a close.
Our festival programme also contains a great deal of popular classics not confined to the parameters of war. Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Chopin’s Piano Sonata No.1 to Saint Saens’s Septet, provide music for all tastes and we hope that you’ll join us for some unforgettable concerts in St Mary’s Church, Lasham this June 2019.
